Beginner Cameras for Aspiring Photographers
By: Willow Kinney
Any new photographer knows the struggle of finding a well-priced beginner camera that is high quality. There are different brands, models, and prices. There is too much to account for when picking a camera. Sometimes you need a bit of help like this article.
Nikon COOLPIX B500
The COOLPIX B500 is a one-shot camera. So no need to worry about buying more expensive lenses. It is also a mid-sized bridge camera. Not only is the b500 a great camera for photos but also for video too! With a chunky handgrip that protrudes quite far from the body that makes it feel very secure in the hand. Thankfully, it isn’t one of the more expensive cameras, usually, its price ranges from around $200-$400.
GoPro Hero7 White, Silver, Black
The GoPro Hero7 White, Silver, and Black are a set of cameras by GoPro which are generally for action shot videos but can do just as good with photography. The GoPro Hero7 White is an entry-level kind of camera. The GoPro Hero7 Silver is a mid-range level camera. The GoPro Hero7 Black is the high end most featured of the three cameras. And they each differ in prices depending on the level. It uses a 17mm lens. These cameras are one-shot cameras so just one built-in lens.

The History of Chocolate
By: Samantha Shish
Did you know that about 100 pounds of chocolate is eaten every second? Crazy right? Well, I bet there is a lot that you don’t know about chocolate, besides how delicious it is. There is a lot to chocolate’s history, even more than there is sugar in a chocolate bar.
In 1900BC, Mesoamericans believed that the cacao bean, also known as the cocoa bean, was a food sent from heaven, so they ate it at royal feasts. They even used them in rituals. Most Mesoamericans also used the beans as currency.
Chocolate was first made as a bitter drink with foam. The cacao beans were first ground, then mixed with cornmeal and chilli peppers, and finally poured several times to become a sour foaming drink.
Much later in 1828, the making of chocolate was forever changed when Coenraad van Houten made what he called, the Cocoa Press. This machine could smash the cocoa bean and separate the cocoa butter and the fat from the powder of the bean. Some people mixed the powder into a drinkable solution. But others recombined the power and the cocoa butter by melting and mixing them together, making the solid chocolate we all know today. Not long after in 1875, a Swiss chocolatier named Daniel Peter added powdered milk to the mix, making milk chocolate.
Today, we have many different chocolate companies with many different kinds of chocolate. Two fifths of the world’s chocolate comes from Cote d’Ivoire, Africa, so most chocolate companies have their chocolate products made there. Chocolate made from Cote d’Ivoire, use over two million child and slave laborers which is why everyone should buy free-trade chocolate as often as possible to stop supporting the negative side of such a sweet industry.
Yet knowing more about it’s fascinating and somewhat cruel history, as well as it’s production today, tells us where these associations originate. So the next time you unwrap your next bar of chocolate, take a moment to realize that not everything about chocolate, is sweet.

The Problem with Women's Pockets
Evelyn
Pockets: the bane of every woman’s existence. Have you ever looked at a woman’s pockets and realized something... like the size of them? They are way too tiny to really hold anything, and sometimes they aren’t even there. There are even fake pockets on pants. What is the point of going through the effort of making pockets designs when you could have made an actual pocket?
I wear a lot of jeans, and I have noticed that on the front of the jeans, the pockets are big enough to hold a chapstick or a cough drop and that’s about it. Women can only fit their phones in their back pockets, and, even then, they are so tiny everything just falls out of them. There are boys that have their phones in their front pockets and have no problems about the size of the pockets in their pants nor do they worry about things falling out of their pockets. I have a brother and when he was seven he had bigger pockets than full-grown women. What does a seven-year-old have to carry around that an adult doesn’t?
In this day and age, women are supposed to carry a phone, money, credit cards, keys, and anything else we might need. Where are we supposed to put it all? A purse you say. Have you ever ridden a bike with a purse? It is so annoying to have this small thing constantly bumping your leg. Also, purses are so easy to leave places. Every time you go somewhere, you need to make sure you have your purse. Some pieces of clothing, like skirts, dresses, and some other pants, don’t even have pockets in them. In the 1600s, pockets were made. Men had accessible pockets on their clothes. Women had pockets, but, according to Today news, they “were a separate garment that tied on between a skirt and petticoat” and were only used by those in the higher class (Today). They were also of a size of use back then too! In the 1600s, women were able to carry pincushions, thimbles, pencil cases, knives, scissors, keys, spectacles, watches, diaries, combs, mirrors, and snacks all in their pockets, but not all at the same time. In the late 1800s, women were expected to wear tight clothing, so “pockets became smaller [...] and basically useless” (Today). As Christian Dior said in 1954, “men have pockets to keep things in, women [have pockets] for decoration.” Why is this still true today, sixty-five years later?

The Importance of Community
By Chloe Wargin
What is a community? According to Merriam Webster, a community is “a group of people who have the same interests, religion, race, etc.” Samantha Yungmann would describe it as “a place, not always physical, but somewhere you feel safe and almost feel celebrated.” Both trusted sources highlight the important aspects of having a community. Having shared interests with others can lead to positive conversations about your passions. Being able to trust members of your community can help you solve personal issues. You may be wondering why all this matters. Well, that’s simple; having a group of people to confide in is vital for youths.
On November 4th, I sent out a survey asking the student body for their insight on communities. I wanted to know how many people were in a community and if those people knew what it was like to be part of one. While looking through these responses, I found that most people were indeed in a community of some sort. It makes sense that so many people have a community considering that the wonderful internet allows us to connect with thousands of people with the same interests.
History has shown that people function better when they have people to connect with. It may be a morbid fact, but a pattern found in many serial killers is that they had very little play or social interaction of any kind with other kids (learned that one from my therapist). It is so important that kids have people they trust because simply having a friend can be the difference between someone having the support they need and being left alone.
Now that you’ve heard everyone else’s opinions, I think it’s time I shared mine. I believe that in order for a person to thrive, they need a community. They need some sort of group who can help them to succeed. I know from personal experience that life is hard when you’re on your own. Life changes in ways that we don’t or can’t possibly expect, so it’s really important that everyone has someone, a shoulder to cry on, a person to make you laugh, even just someone who likes the same dorky ghost hunting show. Anyway, thanks for reading my article. I hope you learned something new.

Homework: Why We Should Do Less
by: Kernel Sanders
It may seem that homework is pretty straightforward and is very basic; however, there is a dark side to homework that makes students dislike completing it for school. Students should receive less homework because of how long it can take to finish and because of how stressful it can be. Students, after school, have many activities varying from sports to theatre to music and often rush to do their homework. Health.usnews.com states, “students should only be doing about ten minutes of homework per night per grade level”(US News.com). After interviewing some peers at a school, most of the students spend more time than they are supposed to on homework with more time being spent on homework for their core subjects. Students spending more time than they should on homework is a sign that schools are assigning too much homework for students to complete each night. If students receive less homework than they do right now, they will have more time to refocus on other out of school activities that are important to them. In addition, students can get very stressed out when they worry about the amount of homework they have each night. According to Stanford News it says, “56% of students consider homework a primary source of stress” (Stanford.EU). In other words, more than half of all students think homework is stressful. Students experiencing stress is normal, however, over time stress can develop into mental health problems such as depression and anxiety which both can lead to suicide. For example, “Two teens in eastern China committed suicide after ‘failing to complete homework assignments” (South China Morning Post). Schools and administrators should consider decreasing the amount of homework students receive to avoid horrible consequences like suicide and depression. Don’t misinterpret this writer; homework may have a dark side, , but homework can still be a good thing because it helps students learn better by reviewing skills they learned in class. Still, when teachers assign so much, it might be better for the greater good to distribute a fair amount of work, especially in regard to core classes.Teens need to take responsibility too and use the time that is given to them; however, there isn’t always time given during the day, and it isn’t fair to take over a student’s entire night.
